World Language Showcase at Spruce Creek
On Saturday, March 15, 2014, Spruce Creek High School hosted the Volusia County World Language Showcase, a festival celebrating languages and cultures studied in Middle and High School: students competed and performed in French, Japanese, Latin, or Spanish.
This was the day to celebrate students’ achievements in the various languages and also have fun speaking, singing, dancing, and playing games centered on languages or cultures studied. Students, parents and all visitors could enjoy food from different countries, watch live presentations with a cultural talent show and skits, and admire students’ handicrafts and projects; they also played all kinds of games and treasure hunts, enjoyed a karaoke show with songs in other languages, and browsed through an art show. The competitions included online tests, impromptus on the computers, poetry recitation, and a Mini Olympics event. It was a lot of fun and it showcased the various facets of language study, as well as our students ‘great talents and skills.
The following Spruce Creek High School teachers were involved with their students: Mme Augat and Mlle Hemings (French); Mr. Keller (Latin); Sra. Cabrera, Sra. Nolin, Sra. Sarasua, Sra. Schoultz, and Sra. Wagner (Spanish).
The Festival began with a Parade of Flags and a welcome by Spruce Creek’s Assistant Principal Mrs. Susan Gangi who also introduced Mr. James Tager, Director of K-12 Curriculum for Volusia County. Ms. Grace Kellermeier, Volusia County Teacher of the Year provided the keynote address on the importance of foreign languages.
Ms. Gianna Acevedo-Alamo, World Language Supervisor for Volusia County awarded scholarships to the following outstanding students of foreign languages:
Fairooz Haque, Natassia Sendra, Felicitas Amon, Chloe Pappa, Hyunseo Lee, John Peterson, and Eric Arevalo. Congratulations to those students!
The Festival was a fun and enriching multi-cultural event for participants and visitors alike.
